This Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate was in recess. 
  • House – House Republicans nominated Steve Scalise (R-LA) as the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House however he withdrew from consideration before a floor vote could take place. After Scalise’s withdrawal, House Republicans nominated Jim Jordan (R-OH) as the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House. 
  • Biden Administration – On October 7, the White House released a statement from President Biden condemning Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel. Among other things, the statement said “Israel has a right to defend itself and its people” and emphasized that the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s security is “rock solid and unwavering.” 

Next Week in Congress

  • Senate –  The Senate will reconvene on Monday, October 16. 
  • House – The House may vote for a Speaker on the floor.
