This Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate confirmed several nominations. Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA) was sworn into office. 
  • House – The House passed the Modernizing the Acquisition of Cybersecurity Experts Act (H.R. 4502). The motion to vacate the seat of Speaker Kevin McCarthy passed 216 – 210, removing him from the role of Speaker of the House. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) will serve as Speaker Pro Tempore until a new speaker is elected. 
  • Biden Administration – On October 5, the White House issued a fact sheet detailing a multi-week Administration-wide tour where President Biden, Vice President Harris, First Lady Jill Biden, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, Cabinet members, and Senior Administration Officials will speak in favor of “Bidenomics” and President Biden’s Investing in America agenda.

Next Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate will reconvene on Monday, October 16. 
  • House – The House Republican Conference will gather on October 10 for candidates to make presentations, and on October 11 to hold internal elections to nominate former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s replacement. House Floor vote(s) on formally naming a new Speaker could come as early as the 11th, or occur later.
