The Senate passed two Congressional Review Act (CRA) measures: the DC policing CRA (H.J.Res. 42) by a vote of 56-43, and the Public Charge CRA (S.J.Res. 18) by a vote of 50-47, both short of the two-thirds threshold needed to override an expected veto by President Biden. The Senate also confirmed nominations.

  • Senate – The Senate passed two Congressional Review Act (CRA) measures: the DC policing CRA (H.J.Res. 42) by a vote of 56-43, and the Public Charge CRA (S.J.Res. 18) by a vote of 50-47, both short of the two-thirds threshold needed to override an expected veto by President Biden. The Senate also confirmed nominations.
  • House – The House passed the Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act of 2023 (H.R. 2494) and the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act (H.R. 3091).

Next Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate will be in recess and is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday, May 30; however, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has announced that Senators may need to return to the Senate next week to vote on a debt limit deal if one is reached.
  • House – The House may consider the HALT Fentanyl Act (H.R. 467) and two CRA measures: one rescinding the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s rule, “Control of Air Pollution From New Motor Vehicles: Heavy-Duty Engine and Vehicle Standards” (S.J. Res. 11), which the Senate passed in April by a vote of 50-49; and one nullifying the Department of Education’s rule suspending federal student loan payments and discharging student loan debt (H.J. Res. 45).
