This Week’s Update

The Senate passed a procedural measure to advance the process to move to a conference committee to reconcile the America COMPETES Act (H.R. 4521) and the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (S. 1260). The Senate confirmed the nominations of Lael Brainard to be Federal Reserve Vice Chair, Frank Calvelli and Kyrsten Jones to be Assistant Secretaries of the Air Force, and Brad John Crabtree to be an Assistant Secretary of Energy.  The Senate failed to invoke cloture on the nomination of Lisa Cook to be a Member of the Federal Reserve Board, due to Democratic Senators being absent with COVID-19. The Senate postponed votes on the nominations of Alvaro Bedoya to be a Member of the Federal Trade Commission, and Julia Gordon to lead the Federal Housing Administration.

  • House – The House passed the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act (S. 3522), the Courthouse Ethics and Transparency Act (S. 3059), and the Assessing Xi’s Interference and Subversion (AXIS) Act (H.R. 7314). The House postponed a vote on the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act (H.R. 350).

Next Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate will vote on 28 motions to instruct conferees to the America COMPETES Act (H.R. 4521)/U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (S. 1260) conference committee. The Senate will continue its consideration of pending nominees, which may include Jerome Powell to be Federal Reserve Chairman, Lisa Cook and Phillip Jefferson to be Members of the Federal Reserve Board, Alvaro Bedoya to be a Member of the Federal Trade Commission, Julia Gordon to lead the Federal Housing Administration, Elizabeth de Leon Bhargava to be an Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and Joshua Frost to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury.
  • House – The House will hold a committee work week and meet in pro forma session. The House will reconvene on May 10.
