This Week’s Update

The Senate and House took procedural steps to move to a conference committee to reconcile the America COMPETES Act (H.R. 4521) and the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (S. 1260). The Senate confirmed the nominations of Nani Coloretti to Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget, C.S. Eliot Kang to be Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation, January Contreras to be Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services, Judith DelZoppo Pryor to be First Vice President of the Export-Import Bank, Mallory Stewart to be Assistant Secretary of State, John Williamson to be Assistant Secretary of Labor, and Caroline Pham, Summer Mersinger, Kristin Johnson, and Christy Goldsmith Romero to be members of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The Senate failed to invoke cloture on the nomination of David Weil to be Administrator of the Wage and House Division at the Department of Labor. The Senate passed the Ocean Shipping Reform Act (S. 3580).

  • House – The House passed the Securing a Strong Retirement Act (H.R. 2954), the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (H.R. 3617), and the Affordable Insulin Now Act (H.R. 6833).

Next Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate is expected to vote on the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. The Senate may consider legislation to suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus, as well as a $10 billion supplemental appropriations package to support the COVID-19 response. The House and Senate may take additional steps to move to a conference committee to reconcile the America COMPETES Act and the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act.
  • House – The House is expected to vote on a resolution to hold Peter Navarro and Daniel Scavino in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with subpoenas from the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. The House may also vote on the Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (H.R. 1916).
