The Senate

Yesterday

Debt Ceiling Vote
The motion to invoke cloture on the legislative vehicle to raise the debt ceiling was never brought to a vote as Senate Republicans offered a compromise to Democrats to suspend the federal debt ceiling until December 16. The proposed compromise would increase the limit on federal borrowing by a fixed dollar amount that would be sufficient to tide the Treasury over until December, when Congress would have to vote again to avoid a default. The limit would have to be raised by a specific amount of debt, something relevant to upcoming elections in 2022.

Today

McConnell’s Compromise
Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has proposed a compromise to the senate being vote on today. The proposal would suspend the debt limit until December 16. Many Democrats have not expressed support for the compromise such as Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL). The default is expected to occur on October 18 and experts believe a budget reconciliation process that has been proposed by Republicans that Democrats undertake would take 2 weeks, until October 21st.
