This Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate confirmed Daniel Kritenbrink to be Assistant Secretary of State, Lily Batchelder to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Jayme White and Sarah Bianchi to be Deputy U.S. Trade Representatives, and several judicial nominees.
  • House – The House passed a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government beyond the current September 30 expiration date to December 3 (H.R. 5305). The CR includes a suspension of the debt ceiling until December 2022, $28.6 billion for natural disasters, $6.3 billion for Afghan relocations, and an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program. The House also passed the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 4350) for Fiscal Year 2022 and the Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 3755).

Next Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate is scheduled on Monday to vote on invoking cloture on the House-passed CR that includes the suspension of the debt limit, which is expected to fail. The House and Senate will consider legislation to avoid a government shutdown. The Senate is expected to continue its consideration of pending nominations.
  • House – The House is scheduled to consider the bipartisan infrastructure package, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (H.R. 3684), but a vote could be delayed. The House could also potentially vote on the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package. The House is expected to vote on the Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act (H.R. 3110), the Protect Older Job Applicants Act (H.R. 3992), the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act (H.R. 2119).
