This Week’s Update

The Senate confirmed the nominations of Brian Montgomery to be Deputy Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Troy Edgar to be Chief Financial Officer of the Department of Homeland Security. The Senate passed the USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act (H.R. 6172), with an amendment from Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT). H.R. 6172 would extend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act through the end of 2023. The bill will now go back to the House for consideration.

This Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate confirmed the nominations of Brian Montgomery to be Deputy Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Troy Edgar to be Chief Financial Officer of the Department of Homeland Security. The Senate passed the USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act (H.R. 6172), with an amendment from Senators Mike Lee (R-UT) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT). H.R. 6172 would extend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act through the end of 2023. The bill will now go back to the House for consideration.
  • House – The House is set to vote on H.R. 6800, the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act, on Friday evening. The bill is expected to pass largely along party lines. H.R. 6800 is a $3 trillion coronavirus response package, which includes nearly $1 trillion for state and local governments. The House is also expected to pass H. Res. 965, a resolution allowing the House to engage in remote voting by proxy and to conduct committee business remotely during the coronavirus pandemic.

Next Week in Congress

  • Senate – The Senate is expected to consider the nomination of James Trainor to be a member of the Federal Election Commission, as well as other pending nominations.
  • House – At this time, the House schedule for next week has not been announced.
