This Week’s Update

Last week the Senate confirmed the nominations of: Sylvia Mathews Burwell to be Secretary of Health and Human Services; Timothy Massad to be a CFTC Commissioner and Chairman; J. Christopher Giancarlo to be a CFTC Commissioner; and Sharon Bowen to be a CFTC Commissioner. The Senate also passed the “Insurance Capital Standards Clarification Act of 2014” (S. 2270)



This Week in Congress

  • House –  The House was not in session this week.

 

  • Senate – The confirmed the nominations of Sylvia Mathews Burwell to be Secretary of Health and Human Services by a 78-17 vote; Timothy G. Massad, to be a CFTC Commissioner and Chairman by voice vote; J. Christopher Giancarlo, to be a CFTC Commissioner by voice vote; and Sharon Bowen to be a Commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission by a 48-46 vote. The Senate passed the “Insurance Capital Standards Clarification Act of 2014” (S.2270) as amended by the Collins substitute amendment, which would amend the capital requirements applied by the Federal Reserve to insurance companies under Section 171 of the Dodd-Frank Act.

 

Next Week in Congress

  • House – The House is likely to consider the “Mortgage Choice Act” (H.R. 3211) and the “Demanding Accountability for Veterans Act” (H.R. 2072).

 

  • Senate – The Senate will hold clotures votes on the following nominations on June 9: M. Hannah Lauck to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia; Leo T. Sorokin to be United States District Judge for the District of Massachusetts; Richard Franklin Boulware II to be United States District Judge for the District of Nevada. The Senate will also likely consider the nominations of Lael Brainard, to be a Member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System; Jerome H. Powell, to be  Member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System; and Stanley Fischer, to be Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors.
