This week’s Washington Update covers: taxes; financial services; energy and environment; defense; transportation and infrastructure; and technology.

This Week in Congress

  • House – The House approved the “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013” (S. 47) and the “Academic Competition Resolution of 2013” (H. Res. 77).


  • Senate – The Senate confirmed the nominations of Senator Hagel to be Secretary of Defense and Jacob Lew to be Secretary of the Treasury. The Senate also voted against two competing sequester replacement bills (S. 16 and S. 388).


Next Week in Congress

  • House – The House will consider the Senate amendment to the “Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act of 2013” (H.R. 307) and a bill to require that the President’s annual budget “provide an estimate of the cost per taxpayer of the deficit” (H.R. 668). It is also likely that the House will consider a continuing resolution to fund the federal government for the remainder of FY 2013.


  • Senate – The Senate will consider two judicial nominations on Monday. The schedule for the remainder of the week is uncertain.
