This Week’s Update

This week’s Washington Update covers: taxes; financial services; energy and environment; defense; and transportation.

This Week in Congress

  • House – The House approved the conference report to accompany the “National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2013” (H.R. 4310) and a bill to address the budget sequestration at the beginning of next year, the “Spending Reduction Act of 2012” (H.R. 6684). Late yesterday, the House canceled the scheduled vote on the Republican “Plan B” proposal to extend expiring tax provisions (H.J.Res. 66).

 

  • Senate – The Senate considered the “Hurricane Sandy Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act” (H.R. 1). The Senate also approved the conference report to accompany the “National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2013” (H.R. 4310) by an 81-14 vote.

 

  • Fiscal Cliff Update – The House and Senate will not vote on fiscal cliff legislation until after Christmas, giving them less than a week to reach agreement on averting tax increases and automatic spending cuts before the end of the year.

 

Next Week in Congress

  • House – The House is in recess until December 27, 2012. Members will continue fiscal cliff negotiations upon their return.

 

  • Senate – The Senate is also in recess until December 27. The Senate is expected to return to the “Hurricane Sandy Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act” (H.R.1) next week.
