This week’s Washington Update covers: taxes; financial services; energy and environment; and defense. .

This Week in Congress

  • House – The House passed a resolution of disapproval of the President’s exercise of authority to increase the debt limit (H.Res. 98) by a 239-176 vote. The Senate is not expected to approve the resolution.

 

  • Senate – The Senate met only in pro forma session.

Next Week in Congress

  • House – The House will consider several noncontroversial bills under the Suspension of the Rules process. The House is also expected to vote on the “Fiscal Responsibility and Retirement Security Act of 2011” (H.R. 1173). This legislation would repeal the “Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Act” a long-term care insurance program that was included in the health care law enacted in 2010. The House will not be in session next Thursday and Friday as the House Democrats hold their annual policy retreat.

 

  • Senate – On Monday, the Senate will vote on the nomination of John Gerrard to be United States District Judge for the District of Nebraska. The schedule for the rest of the week is uncertain. 

 

  • State of the Union – President Obama is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress on January 24.
