This week’s Washington Update covers: taxes; financial services; energy and environment; and defense. .

This Week in Congress

  • House – The House approved the conference reports for the “National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2012” (H.R. 1540) and the fiscal year 2012 omnibus appropriations bill (H.R. 3672). The House passed its version of a year-end package to extend expiring laws including the payroll tax cut, unemployment benefits, and physician reimbursements (H.R. 3630). The House also approved the “Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job Creation Act of 2011” (H.R. 2845).

 

  • Senate – The Senate approved the conference report for the “National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2012” (H.R. 1540) and the “Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job Creation Act of 2011” (H.R. 2845). It is expected that the Senate will approve the fiscal year 2012 omnibus appropriations bill (H.R. 3672) and some version of the year-end package of extensions of expiring laws as early as tonight or tomorrow.

Next Week in Congress

  • House – The House schedule for next week is uncertain. Pending Senate action on the year-end package to extend expiring laws, the House may return for additional votes.

 

  • Senate – The Senate is expected to adjourn for the year following action on the omnibus appropriations bill and legislation to extend expiring laws.
