This week’s Washington Update covers: taxes; financial services; energy and environment; and defense. .

This Week in Congress

  • House – The House approved the “Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act of 2011” (H.R. 10) and the “Farm Dust Prevention Act of 2011” (H.R. 1633). The House also approved a Motion to go to Conference on the “Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act” (H.R. 2055) and the “National Defense Authorization Act” (H.R. 1540). H.R. 2055 is expected to serve as the vehicle for an omnibus appropriations bill, which will include the nine remaining appropriations bills for fiscal year 2012.


  • Senate – The Senate approved an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (S. 1968).

Next Week in Congress

  • House –The House expects to consider a conference report on the remaining appropriations bills for Fiscal Year 2012 and a conference report for the National Defense Authorization Act. The House is also expected to consider pipeline safety reauthorization legislation (H.R. 2845). In addition, the House will consider a year-end package of expiring laws including a payroll tax cut extension, unemployment benefits, and physician reimbursements (H.R. 3630).


  • Senate – On Monday, the Senate will debate and vote on two ambassadorial nominations. On Tuesday, the Senate is expected to debate two versions of the Balance Budget Amendment (S.J. Res. 10 and S.J. Res. 24). The Senate also expects to take up the fiscal year 2012 omnibus appropriations bill and some version of the year-end package of expiring laws.
